OAK HARBOR — The Van Wert varsity wrestling team competed in the Oak Harbor Wrestling Invitational over the weekend. The Cougars finished seventh in the eight-team tourney, but two Van Wert wrestlers finished either as champion or runner-up of their respective weight classes.

The Cougars had to give up four voids in the tourney, which can adversely affect a team’s ability to compete against fully-manned opposing teams, and that was the case on Saturday. A highlight of the tournament was Terri Contreras’ championship in the 285-pound weight class. Contreras went 4-0 in the tourney, with three pins in those four matches.

Finishing second in the 195-pound weight class was Gabe Hill, who was 3-1 overall, with pins in all three of his victories.

Three Cougar wrestlers were fourth in their weight classes. Those include Daniel Thompson at 160 pounds, Colten Royer at 170 and Jordan Daniels at 182 pounds.  All had 2-2 records, with Daniels having two pins and the other two one pin apiece. Zach Thomas was fifth in the 220-pound weight class with a record of 1-2.
