Random Thoughts: ADs and much more

SCOTT TRUXELL/independent sports editor

This week’s Random Thoughts center around area athletic directors, welcome back, attendance limits, COVID game casualties, congratulations, previews and picks, and a coveted resource for high school football fans.

Athletic directors

A tip of the hat to all area athletic directors for putting the finishing touches on the fall sports schedule.

They were hamstrung with little or no information from Columbus and finally got information about football and soccer last Tuesday. They’ve also had to deal with very strict attendance limits and other regulations in a short amount of time and they’ve done a great job.

Well done.

Welcome back

Welcome back fall sports – golf, tennis, volleyball, cross country, soccer and football. It’s nice to have you back.

Attendance limits

No one is happy with attendance limits passed down by the Ohio Department of Health, but let’s try to remember that the kids get to play and that’s the most important thing.

COVID vs. sports

We’ve already seen two casualties of COVID-19.

Monday’s Antwerp-Kalida volleyball match was postponed due a positive test and to the north and east, Friday’s Montpelier/Hopewell-Loudon football game was canceled because of multiple positive cases at Hopewell-Loudon.

These two cancelations won’t be last ones of the season. Mostly likely, the status of high school athletic events will be day-to-day.

Congratulations

Congratulations to the Van Wert girls’ tennis team for winning the Cougar Classic on Saturday.

Led by new head coach Katie Peterson, the Lady Cougars won the title in fairly dominating fashion.

Here’s hoping for continued success this season.

This week

Our preview of Crestview and Van Wert football will appear on Wednesday’s Sports Page and the first Pigskin Pick’em of the season is slated for Thursday.

Of course, complete game stories and the VW independent football scoreboard will be posted late Friday night.

Joe Eitel

It’s a great resource for any Ohio high school football fan – joeeitel.com. The website lists schedules and scores for every single OHSAA high school football team in the state.

The site now has updated schedules for all teams and it’s certainly worth checking out.
