Easley breaks school record at Fremont

FREMONT – Eight boys and four girls from the Van Wert High School swim teams traveled to Fremont Ross High School for the fifth annual Little Giants Invitational involving 25 high schools.  Other schools participating included Anthony Wayne, Bowling Green, Bowsher, Brush, Celina, Clay, Fostoria, Fremont Ross, Fremont St. Joseph, Genoa, Lima Shawnee, Maumee, Maumee Valley Country Day, Millbury Lake, Ottawa Glandorf, Port Clinton, Sandusky, St. Wendelin, Tiffin Calvert, Tiffin Columbian, Toledo St. Francis De Sales, Toledo St. Ursula Academy, Wapakoneta, and Whitmer.

Freshman Eric Easley was best finisher of the day for the Cougars. His second place finish with a time of 1:04.83 in the 100-meter breaststroke set a new VWHS school record. The previous record of 1:06.11 was set in 2009 by Easley’s brother, Brian. Eric Easley also finished 12^th in the 200-meter freestyle.

Also scoring were junior Trey Stemen, who scored seventh in the 100-meter breaststroke and finished 13^th in the 200-meter individual medley; and junior Taylor Grooms, who was ninth in the girls 200-meter freestyle and finished 18^th in the 500-meter freestyle.

Other individuals who participated in the consolation finals were Erin Dingle, 18^th in the 200-meter freestyle; and Cody Hanes, 15^th in the 100-meter backstroke.

Four boys’ relays competed in the consolation finals: 200-meter medley relay (Stemen, Cody Hanes, Adam Saylor and Easley) finished 11^th, 200-meter freestyle relay (A.J. Foster, Kase Schalois, Matt Cucciarre, Vincent Silette) finished  19^th, and the 400-meter relays (Stemen, Hanes, Saylor and Easley) and  (Foster, Schalois, Cucciarre, Silette) finished 13^th and 17^th,  respectively.

The girls’ 200-meter freestyle relay with Erin Dingle, Brittany Jurczyk, Karlyn Koontz, and Grooms finished in 18^th place in the consolation finals.
