VW boys 3rd, girls 8th at swim meet

DEFIANCE – The Van Wert High School swim teams traveled to the Defiance County YMCA for the 14th annual WBL championships. The boys took third place out of 10 teams while the girls finished eighth. Lima Shawnee teams were champions and Celina teams were runners-up for both boys and girls. Other high schools participating included Lima Bath, Defiance, Elida, Kenton, Ottawa-Glandorf, St. Marys, and Wapakoneta.

Freshman Eric Easley was the best individual finisher of the day for the Cougars. His second-place medal finish with a time of 1:04.65 in the 100-yard breaststroke sets a new VWHS team record and breaks the previous record of 1:04.83 he set on January 22. Easley was also fifth in the 200-yard freestyle.

The boys’ 200-yard medley relay also finished second and 400-yard freestyle relay finished fourth. Members of both relays were Cody Hanes, Trey Stemen, Adam Saylor, and Easley. The 200 freestyle relay with AJ Foster, Vincent Silette, Kase Schalois, Matt Cucciarre finished in eighth place.

Other scorers for the Cougar boys were Schalois, 11th in the 500-yard freestyle and fifth in 1-meter diving; Saylor, 11th in the 50-yard freestyle and eighth in the 100-yard freestyle; Hanes, ninth in the 100-yard butterfly and seventh in 1-meter diving; Stemen, eighth in the 100-yard backstroke and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley; Foster, sixth in the 50-yard freestyle and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle; and Garrett McDowell, 11th in 1-meter diving.

Scoring for the Van Wert girls were Erin Dingle, fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and ninth in the 500-yard freestyle; Taylor Grooms, 12th in the 200-yard individual medley and ninth in the 100-yard freestyle; Britany Jurczyk, eighth in the 100-yard backstroke; and Rebecca Johnson, 12th in the 200-yard freestyle.

The girls’ 200-yard medley relay with Dingle, Jurczyk, Alex Czajkowski, and Grooms finished fifth, while the 200-yard freestyle relay with Karlyn Koontz, Holly Hammond, Johnson and Linzey Rice finished sixth, and the 400-yard freestyle relay with Dingle, Jurczyk, Koontz and Grooms finished in eighth place.
