VWFD seeks help with buried hydrants

Van Wert independent

Snow has this fire hydrant nearly buried.

The Van Wert Fire Department is asking for community help to clear away snow from city fire hydrants. With more than 16 inches of snow and ice on the ground – and 615 fire hydrants in the city – local firefighters are looking at a daunting task before warmer weather thaws out the city.

Fire Chief Jim Steele is asking that, if possible, city residents with fire hydrants on their property help in the effort to clear snow from the hydrants.

The fire chief said the help could be well repaid if a fire occurs near a property where the snow has been cleared.

“If would be very much appreciated if city residents would help us clear the area around fire hydrants so we can more easily access them in the case of a fire,” Chief Steele noted.
