Grace Lare is evaporating a pan of salt water while Colin McHugh and a friend look on. Salt crystals remaining simulate the crystallization process taking place as igneous rocks form, a process requiring large amounts of heat.

Ben Scheidt and Colin McHugh are examining properties of minerals to identify them--using color, luster, hardness, etc. Their assignment was to identify 15 of the over 3000 minerals in existence.

The sixth graders at St. Mary of the Assumption School recently studied rocks  and minerals.   Here are some photos of the young people doing experiments and class activities.
