Dick’s Team wins men’s tourney title

The Van Wert Parks and Recreation Department concluded another successful men’s basketball season with a post-season tournament.

All seven teams that participated in league play competed in the tournament. In the first round of games Team Jordon defeated Team Bob Knight, 72-67, in triple overtime. Vorst Paving advanced by eliminating Hatfield’s, 58-48, while Don’s Custom Exhaust was then pounded by Leland Smith Insurance, 111-45.

On the final night of tournament play, the regular season champions, Dick’s Team, defeated Team Jordan 81-58 in the first semifinal game, and Leland Smith squeaked by Vorst Paving 60-55.

After a short break, Dick’s Team and Leland Smith competed for the title. The game was close throughout, with leads changing numerous times. At the final buzzer, Dick’s Team found themselves on top by the score of 59-51.

Dick’s was led by Kevin Longstreth’s 15 points, followed by Brett Hammons, with 14 points, and Andy Breese who scored 11. Leland Smith’s top gun was Luke Lichtensteiger, with 21 points, followed by John VanCleave, with 10. Leland Smith Insurance was also the regular season league runner-up.
