Royal Review 2/23/11

By Nancy Replogle

L.I.F.E. Skills are taught and modeled at St. Mary of the Assumption School.
L.I.F.E. stands for Living in a Faith filled Environment and a new L.I.F.E.
Skill is introduced every 2 weeks. With each new skill, there is a story about
a saint who modeled that word. Those who won the “Courage” award were Ben
Scheidt, Kaden Thomas, Mrs. Wolke, Rayana Thatcher, Kennedy Boroff, and Alana Eddings.

Perseverance is another word that is part of our L.I.F.E. Skills. To persevere
means to continue on no matter what may be in thrown in your way. Our
perseverance award winners were: Mrs. Koenig, Adam Schrader, Natalie Riethman, Erin Terhark, Maggie Cassidy and Jadelyn Jackson.

As part of Catholic Schools Week, the students of St. Mary of the Assumption
School always have a Quiz Bowl. Grades three through six were divided into
teams of four or five. Each team selected a name of a Pope for their team.
After several rounds, it came down to the team of Pope Alexander II against
the team of Pope Pius X. The winners were the team of Pope Alexander II. Team members included Ryan Pratt, Colin McHugh, Caroline Kopack. Risa Pollock, and Kennedy Boroff.

Another tradition during Catholic School Week is to invite the parents and
grandparents to eat lunch with their favorite St. Mary’ student. Lasagna was
served and a big crowd attended. After lunch the parents and grandparents
visited the student’s room and visited with the teacher. What a great way to
finish up Catholic Schools Week.

“Accelerated Reader” is a reading program used by the students at St. Mary of
the Assumption School. The “Accelerated Reader” is designed to
encourage students to read books that challenge and then take a quiz on the
book for points. Points earned by each class are graphed and displayed
on a hall bulletin board. Each student has a “bug” which gets a sticker for
every 5 points earned.

Pictured is kindergarten student Emma Hatcher taking a quiz on one of her books.
