Blood drive, cyber-bullying, and music

The past week at Crestview High School was a decidedly busy one, full of several events the students were able to participate in.

Last Friday, being the most eventful day, there were two main events.  One

was the Red Cross Blood Drive that took place in the high school gym where the students and community members donated 76 usable units of blood.  For that particular event, students were to sign up and make an appointment in advance to give blood at a particular time.  Although not every student had the best reaction to giving blood at the last blood drive, they still showed up ready to give despite the negative reactions.  One such student was senior Christina Holdgreve, who said, “I felt that I should because I know the importance of giving blood as I have had people in my family that have needed blood themselves.”

High school students were also instructed to sign up before the twelve o’clock time slot as they would miss the assembly that was to take place later that day if they did not.  The assembly dealt with an ever growing problem with teenagers today known as “cyber-bullying” which is a form of bullying that is now taking place on the Internet with social networking sites such as Facebook.  The presentation stressed the seriousness of the problem, as it has actually been the cause of several suicides, and it gave students tips on how to deal with cyber-bullying.  Junior Nathaniel Mladenovic felt that it was a valuable presentation saying, “I thought it provided a lot of good information for kids using those sites.”

The third and final event took place on these past Friday and Saturday evenings.  This event was the annual Crestview Dinner Theater, the theme of whi

ch this year was “Around the World” and featured music, props, and outfits significant to cultures around the world.  Director Mrs. Hancock said, “Dinner Theater was a great success.  I was very pleased with the attendance and the quality of the students’ performances.”

On the elementary side, this Saturday evening another “Kid’s Night Out” is scheduled as a fundraiser for the Crestview Elementary School.  At this event, parents will be able to drop their children off at the school for the evening where there will be snacks, games and fun.
