Students learn about authors and more

During Children’s Book Week at St. Mary of the Assumption School, three
local authors visited the classrooms. The authors were Pam and Dennis Smith
and Lisa Eichler. Pam and Dennis have recently written a book called “Tickle
me Safe,” a story about two of our students, Risa and Emma Pollock. Several
years ago, Emma woke to the sound of the smoke detector in her house. Emma
tickled Risa’s feet in order to wake her up and then proceeded to awaken their
parents. Emma’s quick thinking saved the family from the fire.  The Smiths have also written another book called “Dimitri’s Fleas.”

Fourth grade students dressed as famous people from Ohio. The students researched each person and wrote a report and “Powerpoint” about that person. They then made an oral presentation which was recorded so they could critique themselves. Students dressed in character and visited other classrooms.

On Tuesday, May 10, the staff and students of St. Mary of the Assumption
School met at the Prayer Garden to pray the Rosary, one of the traditional
prayers of the church. This prayer helps us to think about the life of
Christ and to pattern our lives after his. A parishioner, Mrs. Marge Greve, made rosaries for each student and teacher.

Common Sense was the Life Skill word for several weeks at St. Mary’s School.
Common Sense means to use good judgment or to take a practical approach to something. Our model saint for common sense was St. Catherine of Siena. St. Catherine took many practical approaches. She wrote letters to kings and
queens to beg them to make peace with the pope and to avoid war. Her efforts
paid off and war was avoided.
