For those who like variety in their weather, Van Wert County had just about all anyone could handle as what turned out to be nearly an entire day of bad weather hit the county on Wednesday. There were funnel clouds, hail, high winds and, to complete the picture, more than 2 inches of rain that came down in sheets, causing flooded basements and streets and resulting in flood warnings for portions of the county -- especially the southwest corner. The action began at approximately 3:27 p.m. when a funnel cloud was sighted along Kear Road. Fortunately, no one was hurt and no buildings were apparently damaged, but high winds did take out six power poles in the area, knocking out power to nearly 1,000 Van Wert households for several hours. Rain just kept coming … and coming … and coming, with several storms passing through the area through the early morning hours today. And things aren’t done yet, with more storms forecast for today, with some of those likely being severe. Photo by Dave Mosier/Van Wert independent
