Edward James Hertel

Edward James Hertel, 86, of Van Wert, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2011, at Country Inn Enhanced Living Center in Latty.

He was born October 4, 1924, the son of the late Otis Ray and Ilo Mae (Keltner) Hertel. On October 7, 1945, he married Laura Ella (High) Hertel, who preceded him in death on May 24, 2005.

Survivors include three daughters, Ellen (Richard) Mathew of Van Wert, Nancy (Carl) Slone of Kendallville, Ind., and Beth (Alan) Wilkins of Kennewick, Wash.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A brother, Gerald Hertel; and an infant grandson, also preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, at Cowan & Son Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Tim Burden officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Ohio City.

Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. Monday, June 6, at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials: Trinity United Methodist Church in Van Wert or The Samaritan Fund of Country Inn Enhanced Living of Latty.
