VW gets new college-age baseball team

There’s a new baseball team in town this summer, the Van Wert Twisters.  The Twisters are members of the Heartland Amateur Baseball League, a summer program for NCAA, NAIA, JUCO, or any applicable non-collegiate players.

The Van Wert Twisters came about from the overabundance of college players wanting to play for the nearby Decatur (Ind.) Dirty Birds.  Placing a team in Van Wert benefits such players in the surrounding area by offering a closer place to play.

The Twisters’ inaugural year started out on a shaky footing, but the team is starting to turn the corner with a few wins under its belt. The Twisters now stand at 4-9 overall and 4-6 in league play. With the league being a wood bat league, it has taken some time for the players to get accustomed to hitting with the wood bats.

Twisters pitcher Josh Miller, a Delphos native, has a 2-0 record for the team. He attends Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Ind., and plays for the Warriors.

To find out more about the Twisters and their players go to their website at www.leaguelineup.com/vwtwisters.  Van Wert Twisters sponsors include Van Wert Federal Savings Bank, Lee Kinstle GM Sales & Service and Jim Clay-Visionary Promotions.

Smiley Park is the home of the Twisters baseball program.
