VWHS runners return from training camp

The Cougar harriers just returned from a weeklong training camp in the Hocking Hills. All 31 members of the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Brendon Moody, spent the week, running, hiking, and working on team building exercises.
While in Hocking Hills, the team explored Old Man’s Cave, Conkle’s Hollow, Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, Rock House, and Airplane Rock. This year’s trip marks the first time that both the boys’ and girls’ teams have been under the direction of one coach since the early 1980s, when former cross country coach Kevin McGonagle had both programs for a brief period.

“This annual trip has been a great tradition started many years ago by the boys’ program,” Coach Moody said. “It is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the cross country season and these kids look forward to it, and the memories that they take away from this tradition last a lifetime.

“Hocking County provides us with great places to train and is truly a gem within Ohio,” the Cougar coach added. “The athletes recognize how blessed they are to be able to go and do this with the support of Van Wert High School and their parents.”

This year’s trip took place from August 1-4. Assisting with the trip was Kimberly Laudick, varsity assistant coach; Van Wert Middle School Coach Kylee Moody; LMT Dawn Agler, and McGonagle.

The Cougars kick off the 2011 racing season August 31 at the Wayne Trace invitational in Grover Hill.
