Photographing water in all its forms

The Wassenberg Camera Club will be meeting Thursday, August 11, at 7 p.m. at the Wassenberg Art Center, 643 S. Washington St. in Van Wert.  Water will be the theme for competition in prints and slides that evening.

Since water easily appears in liquid form, there will be plenty  of pictures ranging from a single drop to foam, rains. lakes, seas, rivers, streams, and waterfalls.

When we think of water in a solid state, snow and ice come to mind and with that may come pictures of falling snow, glaciers, snow drifts, ice sculptures, frozen bodies of water or waterfalls, and ice-covered plants or objects after a freezing rain. There also have been some great, creative pictures of snow cones submitted in other competitions that can’t be overlooked.

Finally, we turn to the third state water may take — vapor.  In this form, we can expect to find pictures of mist rising rising from warm water into cooler air, dramatic clouds, vapor rising from a mountain valley in the early morning, fog (often around Van Wert just as school is about to start) or steam from a factory or power plant billowing into the cool air.

About the only other characteristic of water to consider, is whether it is in motion, and if so, how much, or is it at rest. In either case, the shutter speed is the main consideration in determining how the scene will be recorded. Fortunately, in this digital age, you can make multiple exposures at various speeds to determine just the effect you want without increasing the cost of the effort. The slower the setting, however, the more the use of a tripod comes into play as an important factor in keeping other elements of the picture sharp.

This competition should produce a great number of outstanding images to consider and members and visitors alike will see some outstanding photography.
