Brake runner-up at Celina golf tourney
CELINA — Van Wert traveled Friday to compete in the Celina Invitational, along with 23 other schools.
Conditions were ideal for scoring and Jacob Brake took advantage with four birdies, four bogeys and 10 pars for an even par 72 — the best 18-hole round of his career. Brake was runner-up (out of 120 golfers) to Brandon Lambert of Napoleon, who finished his round birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie, par, birdie for a tourney low 67. Napoleon also took the team championship with a 304.
Van Wert scoring was as follows: Brandon Hernandez 85, Adam Jurczyk 87, Tyler Turnwald 88, and Matt Cucciarre 91.
Van Wert’s 332 was 10th of 24 teams. Napoleon was followed by Minster and Defiance, who placed second and third, respectively.
The Cougars begin their dual match season at Shawnee on Monday. The Cougars host Kenton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday August 25, at Willow Bend Country Club. Spectators are welcome at all matches, both home and away.
