VW golfers get easy win over Redskins

Van Wert independent sports

Willow Bend Country Club and the Van Wert Cougar golf team hosted the Redskins from Wapakoneta under cool temperatures and a brisk breeze.

Cougar senior Vince Moreland controlled his own temperature, remaining hot on the golf course. Coming off his co-match medalist honors earlier this week against Celina, Moreland parlayed a birdie, five pars, a bogey and a tough double bogey to take match medalist honors with a 2-over-par 37. Freshman Brandon Hernandez used consistent play to earn runner-up medalist honors with a fine round of 39.

The Cougars dominated the golf match, winning 158-188 over the Redskins. With the convincing victory, the local linksters remain in second place in the WBL with a 7-1 record. Wapak drops to 4-4 in league action.

The team domination showed, as all six Cougar golfers defeated the lowest golfer on the Redskin golf team. Coming in third for the day was junior Jacob Brake with a 40.  Following Brake, the Cougars tallied a 42 from sophomore Justin Price. This was Price’s first varsity action and he responded well after a nervous start.  Rounding out the scores for Van Wert was senior Matt Cucciarre and junior Tyler Turnwald with 43 and 44, respectively.

Wapak lead man Caleb Acheson, who came into the match with a 38.9 average, had a tough day as he led the Redskins with a 45.  He was followed by Bobby Crow (46), Aaron Johnson (47), and Drew Waymen (50).

Van Wert returns to action today as the Cougars travel to the Mercer County Elks golf course to participate in the Jordan Moeller Memorial Invitational. The Cougars are the defending champions and Tyler Turnwald the returning individual medalist
