Mountain men, friendship and maps

by Nancy Replogle

St. Mary's students in the fourth and fifth grades recently took part in the Jennings Creek Rendezvous at Camp Clay. There they experienced life as it was in Ohio during the 1700s and 1800s.
Students tried to write with a quill pen, were shown how to make musket balls and beading. They also felt different types of animal furs and tried pulling a travois. They were introduced to music, dances and recreation of that time period as well.
At St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School one of our L.I.F.E. skills is friendship. Models for friendship from the Bible were Shadrach, Meshach, and Abedigno, friends of the prophet Daniel. Students were recognized who displayed friendship during the two week period. Chosen were Emily Karcher, Lauren McHugh, Jacob Lautzenheiser, Ryne Williamson, Zack Miller, Reese Krugh, Jaden Spray, and teacher Mrs. Tate.
As part of the fourth grade Social Studies curriculum, students made relief maps out of flour, salt, and food coloring. The maps showed the different regions of Ohio. Pictured are Kennedy Boroff and Ryan Pratt.
