Cougar golfers WBL runners up
By Jeff Hood
for The Van Wert Independent
Van Wert turned in a 331 round good for third place in tournament action and a runner-up finish overall. The WBL season is the combination of the dual meet season(50%) and the season ending tournament(50%). Van Wert earned 9 points

for their 8-1 finish, their only loss coming to Defiance. Needing a victory over Defiance in Thursday’s tournament turned out to be too tall a task as Defiance ran away with it, shooting a 309. Van Wert earned 8 points for finishing third, just one stroke out of second.
Overall that gives the Cougars the 2nd place spot with 17 points — a point and a half ahead of St. Marys. Coach Jeff Hood said, ” Both Defiance and St. Marys had two individuals in the low 70’s, that really helps your team score”.
Van Wert was led by Jake Brake with an 80 followed by Brandon Hernandez and Vince Moreland with 83’s. Rounding out the scoring was Matt Cucciarre and Tyler Turnwald with 85’s. Sophomore Justin Price struggled with a 96. The Cougars will be back on the links at the competitive Bryan Invitational on Saturday, then head into next Thursday’s Sectional play following a tri meet with LCC and Elida on Tuesday at Willow Bend.
