St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic School and YMCA Camp Clay teamed up for a two-day outdoor education experience. Students arrived at Camp Clay on Liberty Union Road early in the morning. After they settled in to living quarters and did some open exercises, Clint Myers, Camp Clay facilitator, led the group in a variety of activities themed to Native Americans and early settlers. Math, science and writing projects were also incorporated. During the Camp Clay event, students prepared their food over an open fire --even baking bread in an oven. Father Stan, parents and family members joined the students around a campfire for games, stories, songs and a spectacular sunset. After more sharing and evening prayers the youths made their way to sleeping bags - girls in the log cabin -- guys in the tepee. Assisting Myers were Bev Wolke, Harriet Schaadt and Dave Mathew. The St. Mary's fifth grade class used owl pellets to learn about food webs and ecosystems. These pellets are regurgitated after the owl has eaten its prey. Students discovered skulls of moles, ribs of voles, vertebrae, and other bones as well as lots of hair that could not be digested. (Incidentally - science class follows lunch!) Pictured is Alisha Terhark. The third grade class recently went to Stoneco and learned about rocks, minerals, and quarry safety. Each student received a hard hat and had a great lunch. Following this they traveled to a wind turbine where they experienced the energy transformation as wind turned the huge turbines. Pat Johnson, third grade teacher, organized this experience with Marty Hohman from Washington School and Robin Kraner from Stoneco Quarry. Fire Fighter Phil came to St. Mary's school to help the students understand the importance of knowing fire safety rules. Pictured are Hank Kopack and Liesel Lare helping with a magic trick. October 4 was the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals and ecology. A special service was offered by Father Stan where he blessed pets brought to school. St. Mary of the Assumption School is celebrating Catholic Schools Week. The theme for 2011 is "Catholic Schools: Faith, Academics, and Service." Sunday Mass began with the student choir singing "You are the Maker" and serving as cantors and readers. A breakfast sponsored by the School Council followed in the gym. The traditional Quiz Bowl began Monday morning following the Mayors proclamation.
