Vantage ABLE program has free classes

The Vantage Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE/GED) program is continuing to offer free classes in various locations throughout the area. Orientation for new students will be held the week of October 24.

Classes in Van Wert are held at Vantage Career Center on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 p.m.; the Van Wert YWCA on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, from 1 to 3:30; and at Trinity United Methodist Church on Wednesday morning from 9 a.m. to noon.

Area locations include the following:

  • Pauldingthe Accent Center on Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
  • Payne — Payne Elementary School from 4 to 6:30 on Monday and Wednesday evenings Oakwood — Oakwood Library on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5 to 7:30;
  • Delphos The Delphos Library on Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 3 p.m.;
  • St. Marysin the basement of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 to 8;
  • Celina — Mercer County One Stop on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11:30 and at Tri-Star Education Complex on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 8.

The ABLE program will offer at no cost to the individual, the following menu of services:

  • Basic skills in reading, math, and writing
  • GED preparation (including the official GED Practice Tests)
  • Refresher or remedial courses for those with high school diploma or GED

To register for ABLE, prospective students must be at least 18 years old or 16 with parental consent/work permit and attend a scheduled orientation. Orientation consists of program information and activities, formal and informal assessments, and personalized goal setting. Following the scheduled orientations, a person may choose to register for the ABLE classes. Orientations are scheduled approximately every six weeks to allow students to sign up for classes.
