Defiance man dies in Oakwood area crash

OAKWOOD — A Defiance man was killed in a Paulding County accident believed linked to alcohol that occurred a little after 2 a.m. Sunday.

Dustin M. Coil, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Paulding County Coroner Dr. Joseph M. Kuhn.

According to the Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Varaina C. Dulaney, 23, of Paulding, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Blazer east on Paulding County Road 178 when she lost control of the vehicle. The Blazer first went off the left side of the road and Dulaney then overcorrected her steering, sending the vehicle back onto the road and then off the right side of the road where it overturned and ejected both Coil — a passenger who was sitting in the rear seat — and front-seat passenger Michael J. Breckler, 22,also of Paulding. Neither Coil nor Breckler were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Oakwood Emergency Medical Services took Dulaney and Breckler to Defiance Regional Hospital, where the woman was treated for minor injuries and released, and Breckler, who sustained serious injuries was admitted for further treatment.

Assisting at the crash scene, in addition to the Oakwood EMS, was the Paulding County Sheriff’s Department, Auglaize Township Fire Department and Countyline Towing.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
