Knights enjoy the holiday season

By Trevor Roop

Already halfway through the second nine-weeks, students at Crestview are all very eager to take a break from school during the holidays. With the Christmas season here, many different students and teachers are volunteering their time to give to less fortunate families.

On December 16, Ben Hotmire, along with the students in NHS, and students from his seventh and eighth grade classes, will be going to Wal-Mart to buy gifts to give to less fortunate families from around the Convoy area. NHS student Alec Heffner said, “I think that this activity will be very fun. I am looking forward to getting the chance to help the community with Mr. Hotmire and his junior high students. It shows the community that we at Crestview are looking to help everyone.”

When asked about giving to the community, Mr. Hotmire said, “I feel that this is a great thing to do during this time of the year. There are some families in the community that aren’t as fortunate as others. They may not be able to have a Christmas like they should, so I think it is good to show them that people in their community care about them. The students love this idea. They all look forward to going to Wal-Mart to get the kids gifts. I even had some students give me money for this activity that they had saved up over a period time. It is good to know that the students also are buying into this, so that people that don’t normally have a Christmas can have one. ”

Along with the junior high’s giving theme, the student council is holding their annual Penny Pitch to raise money for former Crestview graduate, Angie Hill. Her 14-year-old son, Derek, is a student at Van Wert High School, and has a rare form of muscular dystrophy. He has had several surgeries to fix this problem. The Crestview Penny Pitch takes place during the students’ lunches. Students bring dollar bills and silver coins to benefit their grade, and pennies to detriment any other grade that they don’t want to win. All of the proceeds will be going to help the Hill family during this holiday season to cover medical expenses.

Crestview’s SADD organization recently started their annual “candy gram” activity this month. This allows for a student to buy a candy cane from SADD, and they will deliver it to who you request. This could possibly be a great way to surprise your crush or loved one during the holiday season.

During this time of the year, boys and girls basketball are well underway, with both teams starting out strong. The boys started their season 2-0, beating Lincolnview and Van Wert.  They took a weekend off after they won their first Tip-Off Classic, and prepare to travel to Delphos Jefferson Friday, and host Parkway Saturday. “With the weekend off after the Tip-Off, I think it gave us the opportunity to go and watch other teams play so that we get an idea of what we are going up against. We were able to get a lot of good practices over the week to prepare,” said sophomore basketball player Damian Helm.  Coach Rickard and the girls team has started off the season well, finishing third in the McDonald’s Tip Off, and beating Parkway and Ada the following week.
