December activities at St. Marys

by Nancy Replogle

The 5th grade students at St. Mary of the Assumption School have been studying the states of the United State. They brought in samples of products and glued them to a large map. Nathan, Caton, Mason and Risa are pointing to the cotton and coal they added to the map. Some students brought in peach desserts to share with their classmates. The students decided that the best part of studying the South was sampling the foods.
Here comes Santa Claus!!! That's what the Kindergarten and Kindergarten Plus lasses shouted as Santa was spotted in the hallway. Mr. and Mrs. Claus also visited the first and second grade classes. Each child was able to sit on Santa's lap and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. Mrs. Claus gave each child a candy cane. Mrs. Claus also told them a story about how to whisper wishes into the candy cane so that Santa's helper, Elmo, could hear them.
The Kindergarten and Kindergarten Plus classes at St. Mary of the Assumption School were given a special treat by Father Stan. Father Stan read several stories to the children and talked to them about the true meaning of Christmas.
Later that day, Mrs. Langdon from the Pregnancy Life Center came and the children presented her with two baby quilts. The children had drawn pictures on a quilt square and their teachers, Mrs. Tate and Mrs. Replogle, sewed the quilts together.
The second graders at St. Mary of the Assumption School are into habitats and food chains. Using wildlife skins and skulls supplied by the ODNR the students learned what determines if an animal is "wild" or "domestic," how to recognize wild animals and to determine what each eats. They also enjoyed a lively predator-prey game called "Fox and Rabbits." Hunting for food, water, shelter and protection was challenging and risky!
During the Advent season the students learned about what each day of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" song meant. The song was designed to provide reminders of what Christians believed in during a time when Christians in England couldn't worship as they chose. The first graders are shown with the different days of the song. During morning prayer time a new day was added to the song and the entire school sang the song each day.
