For Van Wert County Hospital’s Obstetric Department, the arrival of the first baby is always an exciting event. “We always wonder who is going to be our New Year’s Baby,” said Sammi Joseph, director of Medical/Surgical Services, Pediatrics and Obstetrics.

To their amazement, Amanda and Cody Lape gave birth to the Van Wert County Hospital’s first baby of 2012. They welcomed their son, Carson Daniel Lape, into the world at 6:24 p.m. Thursday, January 5. Dr. Douglas Moore delivered the baby, who weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 19¾ inches long at birth.

For having the first baby of the year, the couple received a basket that included gifts valued at over $900 provided by area businesses.

The gifts include items such as gift cards from DeShia, Home Health Care Solutions, McCoy’s Flowers, McDonald’s of Van Wert, Papa John’s Pizza, The Paulding County Progress, Westwood Car Wash, Wild Willy’s Pizza, Van Wert Medical Services, Visual Image Photography and YWCA.

Also donated were a piggy bank from First Financial Bank, homemade blankets donated by Dolores Foreman and Carol Hennis and baby books donated by the Van Wert Council of Homemakers & Community Education, The Ohio State University Extension, and Usborne Book’s Kirsten Hauter.

A basket full of baby supplies were donated by New Horizons Community Church, a diaper bag from Stephanie Dawn, and the baby’s first birthday cake from Pick N Save.

Other area businesses and individuals who donated baby items included Northwest State Community College’s Van Wert Campus, P & R Medical Connection, Twig III, Avon’s Christina Young, Uppercase Living’s April Ellerbrock, Van Wert County Hospital and Van Wert Manor, who donated an embroidered hat and blanket.

The couple was very appreciative of the basket received. Van Wert County Hospital would also like to thank the generous individuals and businesses that contributed to the 2012 Van Wert County Hospital New Year’s baby. Congratulations to the new parents!
