VW swimmers compete in area tourney

CELINA — The Cougar swim teams traveled to Mercer/ Auglaize County YMCA for the Celina/Wapakoneta Invitational involving 19 schools. The Van Wert boys placed fifth overall and the girls 10th.

Lima Shawnee won the meet for girls and Ottawa-Glandorf for the boys. Other schools participating included Ada, Celina, Coldwater, Elida, Fort Recovery, Kenton, Lima Bath, Lima Central Catholic, Lima Shawnee, Marion Elgin, Marion Local, Minster, New Bremen, St. Marys Memorial, St. Henry, Upper Scioto Valley, and Wapakoneta.

The only VWHS first place finisher was Eric Easley in the 100-yard breaststroke. He also scored a fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle.

Other scorers for the Cougar boys were Trey Stemen, fifth in the 100- yard backstroke and 13th in the 100-yard freestyle; Matt Cucciarre, seventh in the 500-yard and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle; Cody Hanes, seventh in the 100-yard and 12th in the 50-yard freestyle; and AJ Foster, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle.

Scoring for the Van Wert girls were Taylor Grooms, eighth in the 500-yard and 10th in the 100-yard freestyle; Erin Dingle, ninth in the 100-yard backstroke and 12th in the 200 yard individual medley; and Brittany Jurczyk, 11th in the 100-yard backstroke.

Both of the boys’ 400-yard freestyle teams scored. Eric Easley, Kase Schalois, AJ Foster, and Cody Hanes finished third and Jacob Scheidt, Adam Jurczyk, Kory Schlatter, and Josh Overholt finished 12th. Also scoring were 200-yard medley relay team, Hanes, Easley, Stemen and AJ Foster, fourth; and the 200-yard freestyle relay team, Daniel Silette, Stemen, Cucciarre, and Schalois, in 12th.

Scoring relays for the girls were the 400-yard freestyle team, with Jurczyk, Andi Foster, Dingle, and Grooms, which finished ninth; and the 200-yard medley team with Hannah Stemen, Jurczyk, Grooms and Dingle, which finished 13th.

The Cougar swimmers will next compete on January 17 when they travel to Ayersville.
