County Spelling Bee date announced

Sandra Freeman, coordinator for gifted and curriculum services for the Western Buckeye Educational Service Center, cordially invites the public to attend the 2012 Journal-Gazette Van Wert County Spelling Bee. The county bee is scheduled for Thursday, February 9, at 7 p.m. at the Marsh Foundation School Auditorium.

Fourteen contestants representing eight Van Wert county schools, in grades 5-8, will compete for the honor of representing Van Wert County at the Journal-Gazette Regional Spelling Bee in Fort Wayne, Ind., on March 17.

Individual school champions are:

  • Crestview Elementary — Robert Gonzalez, fifth grade; Amber Lichtenberger, sixth grade

  • Crestview Junior High — Emma Saylor, seventh grade; Isaiah Longwell, eighth grade
  • S.F. Goedde Building (Van Wert) — Marshall Healey, fifth grade
  • Lincolnview Elementary — Carly Wendel, fifth grade; Frankie Carey, sixth grade
  • Lincolnview Junior High — Katlyn Wendel, seventh grade; Skyler Whitaker, eighth grade
  • Lincolnview Marsh School — Michael Stephey, eighth grade
  • St. Mary of the Assumption School — Joey Schaufelberger, fifth grade
  • Van Wert Middle School — Lauren Cooper, sixth grade; Nicholas Motycka, seventh grade, Wade Healey, eighth grade

Robert Scheidt, M.D., of Van Wert is the pronouncer for the spelling bee. Judges for the contest are Crestview Elementary Principal Kathy Mollenkopf, Lincolnview Elementary Principal Gordon Stemen and Van Wert Middle School Principal Mark Bagley.

Lincolnview-Marsh School Principal Roger Salisbury is in charge of the physical set-up of the competition

Van Wert Federal Savings Bank is sponsoring the awards for the event. All participants will receive recognition of their participation.

Contestants are reminded to report to the Marsh Foundation School Library at 6:30 p.m. the day of the spelling bee.
