2 Cougars earn WBL wrestling titles

The Van Wert Cougar wrestling team finished sixth in the Western Buckeye League tournament that took place Saturday.

Perennial WBL wrestling power Wapakoneta won the league championship with 174 points, while Elida was second with 138 points and Defiance close behind in third place with 131 points. Lima Bath was fourth with 111 points, Shawnee fifth with 96 points and the Cougars sixth with 88 points, closely followed by Celina with 86 points. The final three teams were Celina (75 points), Ottawa-Glandorf (43 points) and Kenton (36 points).

Two Van Wert wrestlers won league championships in their weight classes. Cougar champs were Zack Burk at 126 pounds and Terrin Contreras at 285 pounds.

  • 138 pounds – Sean Dorsch, 0-2
  • 145 pounds – Daniel Thompson, 1-2
  • 152 pounds – Colten Royer, 2-2 (2 pins), fourth
  • 160 pounds – Jordan Daniels, 2-1, second
  • 170 pounds – Gabe Hill, 1-2 (1 pin)
  • 182 pounds – Brady Strawer, 0-2
  • 195 pounds – void
  • 220 pounds – Zach Thomas, 1-2 (1 pin)
  • 285 pounds – Terrin Contreras, 3-0 (3 pins), first
