Motorcycle crash kills former VW resident

MIRA MESA, Calif. — A former Van Wert resident was killed in a motorcycle accident on February 23 in the California community of Mira Mesa.

According to La Mesa news outlets, Jeffrey L. Marxen, M.D., 60, of the San Diego suburb of Carmel Valley, Calif., died when his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle went out of control and crashed. Attempts were made to revive him, but were unsuccessful.

Marxen was born on April 2, 1951, the son of the late Dr. Norman Marxen, a local surgeon who died in an airplane crash, and Marilyn (Maag) Marxen Motycka.

He was raised in Van Wert and graduated from Culver Military Academy, the University of Toledo and the Medical College of Ohio.

He completed his medical residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich., and moved to San Diego to begin an orthopaedic surgery practice that he maintained for 32 years.

He was married, to Dr. Annette Conway Marxen, and had three children, Philip, Jeffrey Christopher and Marissa by his former wife, Frances Marxen. He also had two stepsons, Sean and Todd Conway.

He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Thomas (Victoria) Marxen and two sisters, Dr. Pamela (Kevin) Kelly and Karen (Iver) Sondrol, and 10 nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held in Shadow Mountain Community Church in El Cajon, Calif., at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3.
