The Wassenberg Camera Club held its monthly competition in prints and slides Thursday, March 8, at the Wassenberg Art Center.  Doors/Windows was the competition theme. Vice President Will Hawkins, Van Wert took first place in prints with a unique shot of one of the windows in the Presbyterian church. Will set his camera on a tripod and changed the setting on his zoom lens while the shutter was open to get the special effect. President Doug Heckler took first place honors in slides with a picture of one of the windows in the building at the corner of Main and Jefferson Streets across from Fountain Park.  L.V. Hollis’s picture of a farmhouse window and view in Cades Cove, which is part of the Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee, emerged the victor from a three-way tie for second.

Acting Treasurer Karl Gribler distributed the club’s new Discount Cards and

informational fliers to the members present. Karl emphasized that the cards are only $5 and are good at 20 area businesses in Van Wert and 5 other nearby cities. The cards are good until April 1, 2013 and offer either for free, or discounts, on such items as meals, sandwiches, pizza, drinks, ice cream, baked goods, nachos, and painting services.

Cards may be obtained from Wassenberg Camera Club members or the Wassenberg Art Center. Those wishing more information about the cards may call the club’s secretary, Rex Dolby, at 419.238.4545, or the Wassenberg Art Center at 419.238.6837.

In other business, Heckler asked members to bring ideas to the next meeting for competition themes for the Fair Board’s photography exhibit this fall. What to do at/with the club’s second monthly meeting was discussed at length and the conclusion for now is that it would be an open meeting for the public to receive answers to their photography related questions and provide information that would be useful to club

members. Doug also reported that he’d try to have specs ready for discussion at the next meeting.

The club gratefully received a huge gift from Helen Jewett of Van Wert of photography equipment that had been used by her husband Hal, and also a Kodak Vigilant Jr. 620 camera given by Bob and Sue Gates.  More information about these gifts will be given in a later article.

The club welcomed former members Jeff and Terry Dietsch to the meeting. The club’s next meeting will be held Thursday, March 22, 7 p.m. The public is invited to bring their photography questions to the meeting, as well as hear about other club topics.
