You don’t need a fancy camera

By Rex Dolby

The Wassenberg Camera Club met for an open meeting Thursday, April 26, at the Wassenberg Art Center.  The meeting was intended to help visitors with photography questions and the discussion turned to the club’s second monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday. The conclusion was to suspend the second meeting until fall and reevaluate its future at that time.

One of the other club discussion topics were whether there might be a public perception that members had to have a single lens reflex camera with a collection of specialized lenses in order to be a successful photographer. Such a perception is totally inaccurate. When a photographer sees, or creates, a picture, it can be captured on almost any device-including an iPod, cell phone, or iPad to name a few.  These non-conventional cameras often offer different points of views and interesting angles. It is true that the quality of the pictures taken with one of these devices may not be as high as that taken with a digital camera, but some of them approach it. Your ability to use the equipment plays a greater role in the quality of the image than the price you paid for it. Remember that the club will not regularly meet on the second Thursdays of the month in May, June, July, and August unless there is a news release prior to the meeting. The club’s $5 Discount Cards continue to be available from club members. Additional information or cards may also be obtained by calling the club’s secretary at 419.238.4545 or the Wassenberg Art Center at 419.238.6837.

The club’s next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, at the Wassenberg Art Center. Weather will be the competition theme that evening.
