VWPD has new bicycle patrol unit

The Van Wert Police Department is pleased to announce the addition of a new bike patrol unit.  Officer Joe Bruns recently completed the bike patrol course and will be the department’s first bike patrol officer.

This unit will be used to supplement the department’s patrol division for special details, criminal/traffic enforcement, and residential and business security.

Police bike patrol units combine the benefits of both foot and vehicle patrol by allowing officers to cover areas not always accessible by a cruiser, while being able to cover larger patrol areas compared to traditional foot patrol.

In addition, bike patrol officers are more accessible to the general public, which can assist in public relations.

Officer Bruns has already worked a few special details and has been working bike patrol based on the operational needs of the uniform division.
