War Album Building gets new roof
Information submitted
In 1944, the American Legion post of Van Wert got an idea after viewing then Van Wert County Sheriff Roy Shaffer’s collection of service members’ photos. The American Legion decided the photos could best be displayed in a centrally located building open to the public. The American Legion War Album Building (communally known as the chapel) was built adjacent to the Courthouse.

By August 14, 1944, over 1,000 photos were collected at the Sheriff’s Department, where the photos were being readied for the War Album Building and for display in September of that year at the Van Wert County Fair. The foundation and floor for the War Album building was poured and the building frame was constructed at the Marsh Foundation School.
Last month, the War Album Building received a new roof through donations from businesses and individuals. Those who sponsored the project through donated money, materials or work include Alexander & Bebout Inc., Hall Lumber Company, Young’s Waste Services, Lance Anderson, Barry Jerome, Ricky Gent, Lisa Wolford, and Jon Williams.
Currently, no more service members’ photos can be added to the War Album Building; however, the Van Wert County Veterans Service Office is looking into ideas on how to expand the number of photos in the future.
