Camera Club competition spotlights patriotism, military
By Rex Dolby

“Military vehicles/patriotic” was the theme for the Wassenberg Camera Club’s competition in prints and slides Thursday, July 12, at the Wassenberg Art Center. Will Hawkins swept the print category with a winning picture of the Statue of Liberty and followed it with an image of flags waving in Rockefeller Center in New York City. Will said he’d taken the pictures while on a VWHS band trip to the Big Apple.
Rex Dolby’s picture of the flag at Kam Manufacturing won the slide category and Karl Gribler’s historic photo taken in May of 1970 when the National Guard was called in for riot control on the OSU campus took 2nd place.
President Doug Heckler announced that the prospectus for the October Show should be ready for distribution very soon. It was noted that there would need to be extras available to leave at city and out-of-town locations, as well as provided to nearby camera clubs. Doug also reported that we have confirmed one judge for the show and are waiting to hear from other candidates.

The club was given the opportunity to purchase two posing columns for the studio at a reasonable price. Questions where raised, however, about storage and how frequently they would be used, which led to the decision to give it further consideration before taking action.
Virginia Thatcher reminded everyone that the deadline to enter your pictures for this year’s fair exhibit is noon (12 p.m.) on August 1! You don’t have to have the pictures ready, but you must know the categories you’re going to enter and be prepared to buy an admission ticket.
Fair categories in color and B/W are: Around the Fair, Landscape, Fresh Produce, In the Air, and Dolls. All pictures, with/without mats, must fit in an 8×10 inch frame with one image per frame.
If you plan to enter the same scene in both color and B/W, they must be taken separately and show composition differences to verify they are two separate pictures.
The club is grateful to a number of equipment donations for its historical display. These will be itemized in a later report.
The club’s next regular meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9, at the Wassenberg Art Center. Outdoor fun will be the competition theme that evening.
