WAPAKONETA – The Van Wert golfers traveled to Wapakoneta Country Club on Thursday for an important Western Buckeye League match and came away with a big win, 158-174.

The match was very tight through three holes and then the Cougars took advantage of a Wapak letdown on the No. 4 hole. The Redskins played the hole 9 over par between their top four men, whereas Van Wert played it 4 over par, despite having Justin Price take a 10 on the long par-5 with out-of-bounds right. That momentum swing was all it took and the Cougars never looked back.

Van Wert’s No. 1 and 2 golfers, Jacob Brake and Brandon Hernandez, combined for a score of 3 over par, establishing a nine-stroke advantage over their opponents from Wapak. Next in for the Cougars were Tyler Turnwald and Justin Price, who beat their opponents by seven strokes. In the last group, Adam Jurczyk and Lucas Etzler had an eight-stroke advantage on the No. 5 and 6 golfers from Wapak.

The Cougars will send five golfers to the Jordan Moeller Invitational on Saturday before returning to action at Pike Run for their final WBL dual match vs. Ottawa-Glandorf. The Cougars are now 10-1 overall, with their only dual match loss coming at Bryan Week 1 of the preseason.
