Officers probe fatal shooting of dog

The Van Wert County Sheriff’s Department is aiding an investigation into the shooting of a dog that occurred Friday in the county.

Deputies are aiding the county humane agent in investigating the shooting, which occurred at a residence on Neiford Road.

Law enforcement officials received a report from the dog’s owner stating that, when he came home from work at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday, he found that someone had shot his 8-month-old German shepherd through the muzzle.

The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic in Decatur, Ind., but later had to be euthanized because of the extent of injuries it had sustained.
