Lady Cougars beat Jefferson girls

After a close first quarter, the Van Wert Lady Cougars upped their defensive pressure and ran away from the Delphos Jefferson Lady Wildcats, winning 60-40 in a non-conference game played on Saturday.

The game was close, 18-17, at the end of the first quarter, but Van Wert then outscored the Jeffcats 16-5 in the second period to go up by 12, 34-22, at the half.

The Cougars continued with their dominance over Delphos in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 14-5 in the third quarter for a 20-point lead, 48-28, heading into the final stanza of play. Both trams scored 12  points in the fourth quarter to maintain the margin of victory.

Van Wert was led by Alexis Dowdy’s 13 points, while Erin Morrow added 12 for the Lady Cougars. Claire Butler and Emilie Moonshower each added 9 points for Van Wert. The Wildcats’ Rileigh Stockwell was the game’s top scorer, with 14 points and was the only Jefferson player in double figures.

Van Wert is now 3-6 on the year, while the Wildcats are also 3-6.

The Cougar junior varsity team was edged 36-24 by Delphos Jefferson. Sophomore Riley Jones led Van Wert’s JVs with 21 points.
