Marlins do well at swimming pentathlon

MARION — On January 12, the Van Wert YMCA Marlins sent five of their swimmers to the Marion YMCA to compete in the Marion Pentathlon Invitational. In a pentathlon, each athlete swims all five events in their age group. The times the athlete swims are totaled to determined a pentathlon time and they are then ranked in their age group, based on their total pentathlon times.

Van Wert’s swimmers fared very well. In the 9-10 Girls’ Division, Emma Pollock finished third overall while Jamie Burenga finished eighth out of a total 27 competitors.

In 11-12 Girls’ Division, Katie McVaigh finished 11th and Risa Pollock 17th out of 42 total swimmers.    Listed below are the results of their individual events, distances are in yards:

9-10 Girls: Emma Pollock – 3rd 50 Free (32.36);  3rd 50 Fly (37.70); 7th 50 Back (41.90); 5th 50 Breast (45.24); 3rd 100 IM (1:24.92); 3rd overall (4:02.12).  Jamie Burenga – 11th 50 Free (35.55); 11th 50 Fly (44.10); 4th 50 Back (40.14); 9th 50 Breast (47.62); 5th 100 IM (1:27.62); 8th overall (4:15.03).

11-12 Girls: Katie McVaigh – 9th 50 Free (30.57); 10th 50 Fly (35.23); 9th 50 Back (35.89); 18th 50 Breast (43.88); 11th 100 IM (1:20.44); 11th overall (3:46.01).  Risa Pollock – 24th 50 Free (33.97); 18th 50 Fly (40.33); 19th 50 Back (40.52); 14th 50 Breast (43.04); 17th 100 IM (1:26.12); 17th overall (4:03.98).

11-12 Boys: Dylan Neate – 7th 50 Free (34.98); 8th 50 Fly (39.92); 6th 50 Back (42.20); 9th 50 Breast (47.40); 100 IM (NT); Overall (NT).
