Darwin R. Frederick

Darwin R. Frederick, 91, of Van Wert, died at 3:16 a.m. Monday, February 4, 2013, at the Van Wert Area Inpatient Hospice Center.

He was born June 17, 1921, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the son of the late William and Hazel (Grotian) Frederick. On February 21, 1946, he was united in marriage with Kathleen “Kate” (Murfield) Frederick, who survives him in Van Wert.

Darwin is also survived by three children, Richard (Linda) Frederick and Ann (Brennan Profit) Marshall, both of Van Wert, and Joan Frederick of Wasilla, Alaska; five grandchildren, Ryan (Tracee) Frederick of Chandler, Ariz., Neil (Valerie) Frederick of Bradford, Kenneth (Karri) Marshall of Centerville, Dawn Marshall of Carey, N.C., and Peter Frederick of Wasilla, Alaska; six great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Audrey Grabner of Roanoke, Ind., and Dallas Frederick of Bloomfield, Ind.

A son, Dennis Frederick; and three brothers, Ralph, Howard and Don Frederick, also preceded him in death.

Darwin was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, in which he served in the 89th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron from 1943-1945. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and Remagen Bridge battle and also saw action in the Ardennes, Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was also an officer in the 89th Cavalry Association and a member of American Legion Post 178 in Van Wert.

He was the owner of Frederick Dodge from 1964-1986. Darwin lived in the Monroeville, Ind., area until 1964, when he moved to Van Wert.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday, February 8, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, with the Rev. Paul W. Miller officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert.

Calling hours are from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, February 7, at the funeral home.
