A boulder with a plaque will be placed at the beginning of the nature path, which will be renamed “Jon Amundson Trail.” In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be Friday, April 5.

Amundson was a life science teacher at Crestview for 35 years and was instrumental in developing the nature trail for his students and the community. He was also a leader in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and was a Vigil Honor of the Boy Scouts of America.

Amundson was serving as the president of the Van Wert County Historical Society when he unexpectedly passed away in September of 2012. The longtime Crestview teacher was born in Bismarck. N.D., and received his undergraduate degree from Spring Arbor (Mich.) University in 1967 and his graduate degree in environmental science from Michigan State University in 1981. After teaching 10 years in Michigan, he came to Crestview to teach science and serve as athletic director, football coach, track coach, sports announcer and bus driver.

“Troop 45 wanted to pay tribute to Mr. Amundson, who not only gave so much to the Boy Scouts of this area but to all young people,” Scoutmaster David Lichtensteiger said. “It is our way of saying thank you.”
