VW boys, girls win county track meet

The Van Wert boys’ and girls’ track and field teams both won championship titles during Tuesday’s county track and field championships held at Van Wert High School.

The Cougar boys had 78 points, to 56 points for Crestview and 41 for Lincolnview, while the Van Wert girls’ team had 98 points, to 42 for Lincolnview and 34 for Crestview.

Amanda Clay and Jared Fleming were the big guns for Van Wert, with Clay winning four events and Fleming two individual and two relay events. Clay won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes and the long jump, while Fleming was first in the 800- and 1600-meter runs, tying his own county records in the process, and was also a member of the winning 4×800 and 4×400-meter relay teams.

Other county record-setting or tying performances included Cougar Seth Kopp’s time of 51.4 seconds in the 400-meter dash, while Van Wert’s 4×200-meter relay team (Kopp, Nick Krugh, Kevon Pierce and Chris Miller) also set a new county record of 1:32.7. The Cougar boys’ 4×100-meter relay team (Miller, Caleb Lloyd, Terrence Branson and Krugh) also set a county record in a time of 44.6 seconds.

Van Wert’s 4×100-meter relay team of Alexis Dowdy, Cheyenne Handy, Marissa Sperry and Whitney Meyers set a new county record of 1:55 (click here for all results from the county meet).
