Habitat for Humanity seeks volunteers
Habitat for Humanity news
Ground has been broken at 320 Thorn St. in Van Wert for Habitat for Humanity’s newest house project. This year’s home recipients include Crystal Robinson and Fred Smith, along with their children: Caleb, Jasmin, Alex, and Aurora. Habitat is now looking for volunteers to help with construction of this family’s new home.
Anyone with building expertise wanting to offer their services through volunteering can call Sue Lichtle at 419.605.2270 or Board President Brent Jones at 419.605.5357. A general contractor will be on site to keep the construction process moving, and, as progress on the home continues, other volunteers will also be needed for the finishing work. Habitat is also in need of a bonded electrician interested in donating expertise to this community-building project.
The layout of this home to be located on Thorn Street calls for four bedrooms and two bathrooms to fill the needs of this six-person family. This design is also set to meet specifications by Habitat for Humanity.
The footer to the home was previously dug late last season, but unexpected bad weather set in before the block could be laid for the home’s crawlspace. The footer must now be trenched out again before the block can be laid for construction to on the project to begin.
Habitat for Humanity in Van Wert County has been in existence for more than 20 years building affordable housing for qualified applicants. Habitat is not a handout, but a hand up. Robinson/Smith family members, like all other Habitat families, are to provide 500 hours in “sweat equity” for the building of their home. Volunteers can also select to have hours included with the family’s to help it reach its goal.
Habitat and the Robinson/Smith family would appreciate the help of any local service organizations, church groups, and individuals who would like to volunteer their time to a good cause within the Van Wert community.
