VWES given $10,000 General Mills grant

Van Wert City Schools news

Van Wert Elementary School has been awarded a $10,000 Champions for Healthy Kids grant for the 2013-14 school year. Partnering with the current VWES Wellness Committee initiatives, physical education instructors Betty Holliday and Dave Branfield said the grant will be used to continue implementation of nutrition education, as well as establish a 100 Mile Club for students.

Promoting healthy nutrition and fitness for America’s youth, Champions for Healthy Kids has helped nearly 1 million youngsters since its inception in 2002.  Launched in partnership with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, this has become a flagship program of the General Mills Foundation, which has distributed more than $5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations.

Through the Champions for Healthy Kids program, the General Mills Foundation awarded 50 grants of $10,000 to nonprofit organizations working to improve nutrition and physical fitness behaviors for youth. Van Wert Elementary School is proud to be one of only 50 grant recipients from across the nation, thanks to the efforts of Holliday and Branfield.
