Red Cross honors volunteers at banquet

The American Red Cross in Van Wert County recognized volunteers for their wonderful support of the Red Cross mission at the 2013 Volunteer Recognition Banquet held Thursday, June 27.

Those recognized include volunteers who help with blood drives and blood transport, assist at fundraising events, volunteer at the hospital, help in the office, and are on the scene assisting disaster victims, locally and nationally. In total, Van Wert volunteers gave nearly 10,000 hours in volunteer service to the American Red Cross in 2012.

The two top awards given were the Clara Barton Award and “Volunteer of the Year” Award. The Clara Barton Award recognizes a volunteer who has displayed significant leadership and commitment to the Red Cross mission. The “Volunteer of the Year” Award honors a volunteer who tirelessly carries out the mission of the Red Cross. Following are the list of awards and recipients:

The Van Wert County Chapter’s Clara Barton Award was presented to Mark Klausing, Disaster Action Team chairman. Klausing has been instrumental in building a strong team of local responders for fires and other disaster needs.

The Van Wert County Chapter’s “Volunteer of the Year” Award was presented to Van Wert County Hospital Volunteer Coordinator Carol Hennis. As coordinator, Hennis oversees more than 40 volunteers who help in a variety of areas at the hospital.

The Van Wert County Chapter’s “Youth of the Year” Award was given to Vantage Career Center for its support of the Red Cross blood services program. Vantage’s students step up to help and recruit at blood drives and are also key supporters of the Day of Caring blood drive.

Cooper  Farms received the “Organization of the Year” award in Van Wert County. The business can be counted on to help with whatever is needed, whether helping with food for the annual banquet or events.

The following individuals were given certificates of appreciation in each program service area of the Van Wert Chapter:

Hospital Volunteers: Thomas Mangette and Annetta Watson

Blood Transport Volunteer: Gale Klausing

Blood Services Volunteer: Ruthie Noggle

Disaster Services Volunteer: Rodney Knauss

Office Volunteers: Merranda Smith and Joan Poling

Disaster Support Organizations: McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Pak-A-Sak

Special guests at the banquet were volunteers from the Paulding County Chapter of the American Red Cross. Rick Noggle, Disaster Action Team chairman for Paulding County, was given the Disaster Volunteer Award for his work in rebuilding the Disaster Action Team in that county.
