Celina man charged with assaulting baby
Mercer County Sheriff’s Office news
CELINA – Mercer County sheriff’s deputies are investigating two incidents involving children.
In the first incident, a Celina man is being held on a $250,000 cash bond in connection with injuries to a 4-month-old child.
John Dziengelewski, 28, is charged with felonious assault in connection with the case. Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey stated that his office received a call from Children’s Medical Center in Dayton concerning suspicious injuries to a young child. The child’s mother had first transported it to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys, and the baby was later transferred to the Dayton hospital.
An investigation revealed that the child was in the care of Dziengelewski, the mother’s boyfriend, at the time the injuries were sustained, and he initially reported that he had fallen while holding the baby, although his account did not match the injuries to the child.
Dziengelewski was initially taken to Montgomery County Jail, but he then waived extradition and was brought back to Celina and is currently incarcerated in the Mercer County Adult Detention Facility.
Deputies also were granted a search warrant for the residence where the assault allegedly took place.
A second incident occurred Sunday, when deputies received a call at 8:04 a.m. from Mercer Health in Coldwater regarding an infant that had been brought into the emergency room unresponsive and was later pronounced dead. The infant, Aidyn Kitchen, who was 27 days old, was brought into the ER by his parents.
Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, and an autopsy was ordered by Mercer County Coroner Dr. Timothy Heinrichs. No other information is being released at this time.
