VW v-ball team defeats Lady Lancers

The Van Wert Cougars won its home opener Tuesday with the Lincolnview Lady Lancers in straight sets, 25-8, 25-18 and 25-18. The varsity is now 1-0 on the year and will be back in action on Thursday when they host Paulding in a non-league contest.

Outstanding serving performances for Van Wert came from Amanda Coplin, who was 17 of 18 serving with an ace; Alexa Dunlap, who served 15 of 16 with one ace; and Claire Gamble, who was 12 of 13. Taylor Doidge led in hitting with eight kills, while Alexis Dowdy had seven kills for the Lady Cougars.

In setting, Coplin led with 12 assists, followed by Riley Jones with eight assists.

Dunlap had 13 digs to lead in that statistical category.

The theme for the contest was “back out,” according to Van Wert Coach Vicki Smith.
