Van Wert had a two-stroke lead with four golfers done for the day, but Roughrider freshman Jacob Hollman then turned in a 46, which helped St. Marys get rid of a 50 and gave them a two-shot lead.

When Cougar fifth man Alex Miller came in with a 47, Van Wert was still one stroke from pulling even, but sixth man Nick Etter shot a 46 to tie the match and allow the Cougars to win the match with Miller’s tie-breaking 47.

Match medalist was Van Wert’s Justin Price, who birdied the last two holes to finish at even-par 35 for nine holes.

“Tonight’s close match shows me the guys are still fighting and trying to improve,” Van Wert Coach Jeff Hood said. “I am proud of all of them.”

With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-2 in the Western Buckeye League and 3-3 overall, while St. Marys falls to 2-2 in league play.

The Cougars take on league-leading Bath next Thursday at Willow Bend Country Club.
