VW v-ball team gets win over Shawnee

The Van Wert Cougars hosted Shawnee in their second Western Buckeye League match of the season on Thursday. Although it took an extraordinary effort on their part, the Lady Cougars were able to come back from two games down to pull off a five-set victory over the Lady Indians.

Van Wert started out slow and lost the first two games by identical scores of 22-25. The Cougars didn’t give up hope, though, winning the third game 25-14 and then edging Shawnee in the fourth game, 25-22. The fifth, and deciding, game went to the Cougars, who started out strong and finished with a 15-5 win.
With the win, Van Wert is now 6-1 on the season and 1-1 in the WBL.
The junior varsity and freshman teams also defeated their Shawnee counterparts on Thursday.
Varsity statistics
Serving – Claire Gamble, 23/23 with 3 aces; McKenna Merkle, 18/18; Amanda Coplin, 17/19 with 2 aces; and Riley Jones, 15/15 with 3 aces.
Hitting – Taylor Doidge, 12 kills; Alexa Dunlap, 10 kills; and Alexis Dowdy and Coplin, 7 kills each.
Defensive digs – Doidge, 15 digs.
Setting – Jones, 22 assists; and Coplin, 11 assists.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action on Monday evening when they host Coldwater in a non-conference volleyball battle.
