YMCA announces winter cage leagues

The YMCA of Van Wert County has announced the upcoming basketball winter schedule. This year’s basketball leagues include the Fundamental League and Bitty Ballers League.

During the fundamental league kids will participate in fun, educational basketball drills and games designed to increase their basketball skill level incorporating basic fundamentals including ball handling, passing techniques, shooting technique, basic footwork, and defensive fundamentals.

The divisions are as follows: 3-4 grade girls, 3-4 grade boys, 5-6 grade girls, and 5-6 grade boys.  Games will be held Saturday mornings, beginning the week of November 16 through December 21.

Registration begins today and runs through October 19.  A $10 late registration fee will be applied beginning October 21.

“This league offers skilled coaching that focuses on the child’s fundamentals of basketball,” said YMCA Program Director Mitch Price. “Through this league, your child will be exposed to key components of basketball including; teamwork, adversity, and basketball skill improvement.”

The Fundamental League also provides player of game awards, post season awards, and a pool party to end the season.

The “Bitty Ballers” Basketball League will follow the Fundamental League, with registration November 4-23.  During this league, kids participate in basketball at a very basic level and serves as an introduction to team sports. The kids that play in this league will play on lower basketball hoops to ensure proper technique while taking into account the strength of younger kids.

This league is designed for boys and girls 4 years old to second grade.

The divisions are as follows: 4 years old to kindergarten boys and girls; first and second grade boys’ league and first and second grade girls’ league.

Games will be held for the 4 years old to kindergarten league on Thursdays, from January 9 through February 13. The 1-2 grade leagues will be on Saturday morning, from January 4 through February 8.
