Charlotte Stemen, 95, died at 10:28 a.m. Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Vancrest Health Care Center in Van Wert.

She was born October 5, 1918, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Harry and Mildred (Smith) Alles. In 1956, she married Charles Stemen, who preceded her in death in 1973.

Survivors include four nephews, John (Susan) Kelley of Princeton Junction, N.J., Harry Alles III of Abington, Mass., Paul (Chris) Alles of Bridgewater, Mass., and Kevin (Patti) Alles of Brockton, Mass.; one niece, Deborah Cates of Stowe, Vt.; numerous great-nieces and nephews; and many dear and beloved friends.

A sister, Marguerite Kelley Petrovia, who had lived in Philadelphia; and one brother, Harry Alles Jr., who had lived in Brockton, Mass., also preceded her in death.

Before moving to Van Wert, Charlotte was employed in Philadelphia as a milliner. In Van Wert, she was employed at Kennedy Manufacturing and also worked at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church as a housekeeper and cook for Father James Siefker for 12 years before retiring.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and its Rosary Altar Society, the Catholic Ladies of Columbia and Senior Citizen Golden Oldies.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 22, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Van Wert, with Father Stanley Szybka officiating.

Calling hours are from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, November 21, at Brickner Funeral Home in Van Wert, where a rosary service will be held at 6 that evening, and from 9-10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
